This vlei rat is recorded in the Kenyan highlands, including alpine grassland, scrub, and heath. The 2011 revision treated its status as a distinct species provisionally because evidence was limited.
Its fur is pale buff, and the ears lack pale tufts.
The Kenyan checklist records it in Afro-alpine grassland, scrub, and heath on the Mau Escarpment and Uasin Gishu Plateau.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
