The Small Japanese Mole is found mainly in eastern Japan. It uses habitats from lowland grasslands and farmland to mountain forest, with regional differences in size and coat color.
Head-and-body length is about 12.1–15.9 cm and mass 48–127 g. The account reports smaller, darker-brown forms in mountains and larger, browner forms in lowlands.
It eats underground insects, earthworms, geophilomorph centipedes, leeches, and sometimes plant seeds. Breeding is mainly reported in spring, with some autumn records.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
