The Black-throated Grosbeak lives in Brazil's eastern Atlantic Forest and nearby regions. It searches for fruit and seeds in the middle forest layer, sometimes in mixed-species flocks.
Adults are mainly slate grey and have a red bill. Adult males have a black bib on the front of the neck. In juveniles, the upper part of the bill is dark.
It lives in pairs in primary forest or tall secondary forest. In the middle forest layer, it follows mixed-species flocks while searching for fruit and seeds.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
