This shrew is recorded in Mexico and southern Texas. It is currently treated as a species, though a 2007 Mexican monograph discussed it as C. parva berlandieri.
The 2007 account of C. parva berlandieri describes brown upperparts and a silvery-grey underside with pale hair tips.
That account records C. parva berlandieri in moist woodland and forest, and on rocky grassy ground near marshes.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
