This rat has coarse fur above and dark orange fur underneath. It has been recorded in highland forest and wetland in the Kivu region of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Its coarse dorsal fur is olive-brown, while the underside is dark orange.
In the stomach contents examined, animal prey such as arthropods and mollusks made up about 70%.
