The Jalapan pine vole is endemic to a limited part of Mexico's Sierra Madre Oriental. It has been recorded in mountain cloud forest as well as some fields and pastures.
Juveniles have dull, darker pelage with a leaden tone rather than brown. Subadults have the species' characteristic brown coat, and adults have the same color but a duller appearance.
It is a herbivore that eats at least 36 plant species. It is nocturnal, makes narrow runways through dense vegetation, and nests beneath rocks and fallen logs.
