A dark-brown hornbill with a white belly; the male’s large red bill is distinctive. It uses wooded, semi-arid country and river corridors in East Africa.
The upperparts are dark brown and the belly is white. The male has a large red bill with a narrow casque; the slightly smaller female has a black base to the lower mandible.
In the Ethiopian Highlands it feeds mainly on insects, and also takes lizards and other small vertebrates. It eats some fruit and searches on the ground and in rock crevices for termites. It is usually seen in pairs or small family groups.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
