This account focuses on the seasonal movements of the Japanese subspecies of Olive-backed Pipit. It breeds in open woodland and grassland from Shikoku and Honshu northward, then moves to lowlands with little persistent snow in autumn and winter.
The sexes look alike. The back is olive-brown, with a cream eyebrow; the cream-colored underside is marked with dark streaks.
It walks on the ground while foraging and bobs its tail. When startled it perches on a tree branch, and it gives a slightly buzzy call in flight.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
