The lowland streaked tenrec is a small mammal with striking yellow-and-black quills and stripes. It lives in eastern Madagascar’s lowland rainforests.
Its body is covered with black-and-yellow quills and has four yellow longitudinal stripes, including one along the center of the snout. The highland species H. nigriceps is a separate species and lacks the snout stripe.
It is mainly active during the day, digs burrows in forest, and eats earthworms and other soil animals.
A January 1999 Central Highlands survey recorded this species at forest edges and open agricultural areas at Mahatsinjo, at 1,550 m. Two individuals were captured in pitfall traps inside Ankilahila forest, at 1,400 m. These local records show its occurrence at some highland sites as well as in lowlands.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
