The Nyika aethomys has a shorter tail than some related species. In two small-mammal surveys on Malawi's Nyika Plateau, one individual was recorded only in the rainy-season survey.
In an identification comparison within Aethomys, A. nyikae is distinguished by a shorter tail relative to head-and-body length than some related species.
In two Nyika Plateau surveys, the species was captured during the rainy-season survey and was not recorded in the dry-season survey. This is the result of those two surveys only.
