This tanager occurs in lowland forests from eastern Costa Rica to Panama. Its nest was described in detail for the first time from a 2023 observation in Costa Rica.
Adult males have a dark leaden-gray head, neck, and back, a yellow rump, and olive upper tail coverts. The underparts are paler gray.
It eats fruit and arthropods and forages from the middle story to the canopy. A nest found in Costa Rica in 2023 sat on the base of a palm frond, about 5 m above ground.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
