This squirrel monkey occurs in the Amazon region of Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. The population treated as the nominate subspecies has a reddish-tan back, golden-yellow bases to the crown hairs, and orange forearms. Brazilian records include seasonally flooded, riparian, and secondary forests.
In the population treated as the nominate subspecies S. c. cassiquiarensis, the back is brighter reddish tan, the bases of the crown hairs are golden yellow, and the forearms are orange. A pale nuchal collar contrasts only weakly with the surrounding fur.
In Brazil, it uses seasonally flooded Amazonian, riparian, and secondary forests. Low floodplains were reported as preferred habitat in the Mamirauá Reserve.
