The gloomy tube-nosed bat is known from a single specimen collected on Tsushima, Nagasaki, in 1962. Surveys there from 2003 to 2006 did not find it, so its current occurrence and way of life remain unconfirmed.
A 2007 report lists a forearm length of 34.4 mm for the one specimen available. This is a single individual's measurement, not a species average or range.
The 2003–2006 survey on Tsushima did not capture it. The authors could not determine whether it was still resident on the island or had arrived there accidentally, and its roosting sites and behavior were unknown.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
