The Mikado Pheasant lives in Taiwan's mountain forests. Males have blue-purple plumage and a long tail.
Males have dark blue-purple plumage and a long, white-barred tail. Females are brown and cryptic.
Mikado Pheasants inhabit Taiwan’s high mountain forests, including steep slopes in Yushan.
Twenty-two surveys from November1985 to December1986 recorded them at1900–3900m in the park.
They favoured steep slopes in primary mixed forest, whereas Swinhoe’s Pheasants occupied lower broadleaf forests, revealing different habitat use within one mountain landscape.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
The Yushan study identifies habitat conservation as central for its pheasants. Retaining forests across elevations preserves the differing habitats documented for Mikado and Swinhoe’s Pheasants.
