This hummingbird occurs at the eastern end of Jamaica. The 2018 survey paper used the earlier name Trochilus polytmus scitulus for this form and described the male’s black bill and long tail plumes.
Males have a velvet-black crest, an emerald gorget and long ornamental tail plumes; the bill is jet black.
The paper describes the range in the John Crow and Blue Mountains as mainly wet montane forest and surrounding coastal lowlands.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
