The Giant White-tailed Uromys is a large rat with a gray-brown back, pale underside, and long tail with a white tip. It is active at night, climbs well, and eats fruit, nuts, insects, and other foods.
The back is medium to dark grayish brown or tawny, with a creamy-white to yellow underside. The naked tail can be longer than the body; its tip is white, and the transition area can be mottled.
It is nocturnal, uses both the ground and trees, and climbs well. It eats fruits, nuts, fungi, and insects, as well as small animals or bark in some places. Reports from Daintree National Park in Queensland and New Guinea describe it opening hard-shelled coconuts.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
