A 1904 comparative account describes the wings and tail as somewhat grayish brown, the lower surface as dull cream, and the flanks as slightly brownish.
A breeding study reports that Clarion Wrens live in open habitats throughout the island. Nests were found in cavities among volcanic rock or sand and in human-made structures; adults in the study carried caterpillars, spiders, and crickets to nestlings.
