The Handsome Spurfowl lives on the ground in montane forest and high-altitude bamboo along Africa’s Albertine Rift. It occurs in pairs and small groups, including on bamboo-covered mountain slopes.
In Bwindi, Uganda, researchers played calls at 244 points during January–March 2004. Birds responded at about 30% of bamboo points and 6% of forest points, making their calls more readily detected in bamboo during that survey.
Comparisons of 50 vegetation plots found denser understorey but less ground vegetation where birds occurred. These places combined foliage above 2.5 metres with less vegetation below that height, revealing fine-scale features of the habitat used by the birds.
IUCN Red List (BirdLife listing) · Least Concern · Global
BirdLife’s IUCN category table lists the Handsome Spurfowl as globally Least Concern. Bwindi findings link its occurrence with bamboo and dense understorey. Ground vegetation and understorey cover are relevant habitat features alongside the extent of montane forest and bamboo.
