This thrush occurs in the Bismarck Archipelago. A 2015 survey on Mussau reported one bird in young secondary forest. The plumage description here is limited to the pre-split Mussau form.
Peterson's 2007 plumage table placed the pre-split Mussau form heinrothi among forms that are black or blackish overall, and records dusky gray-black in several feather areas.
In a 2015 survey on Mussau, one bird was flushed from the ground beside a path through young secondary forest bordering an old coconut plantation. It was not recorded elsewhere in that survey.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
