This aquatic shrew lives in mountain streams in Japan. It uses spaces beneath large rocks and fallen logs on the streambed as shelters.
The back is blackish brown in summer and becomes grayer in winter; the underside is pale brown. Its ears are small and furred. The Kagoshima account reports that bubbles trapped in the coat can make a swimming animal look silvery.
It favors swift streams and rivers. Large rocks, boulders, and fallen logs create cavities and crevices beneath the water where it can shelter.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
