This woodcreeper occurs in Amazonia. Its scaly-looking breast pattern is noted as a feature that distinguishes it from close relatives.
Its breast feathers have rounded oval spots arranged to create a scaly appearance. The spots become progressively longer and form streaks on the abdomen.
A 2002 dissertation treated the X. spixii/elegans group as associated with upland forest and listed terra firme and montane evergreen forest for X. spixii.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
