This small-to-medium wallaby is native to northern and eastern New Guinea, where it occurs in forest and grassland. Populations thought to have been introduced to islands such as New Ireland have contracted.
It is small to medium in body size among macropodids.
On New Ireland and Lavongai, where populations are thought likely to have been introduced, its range has contracted and animals remain in remote mountainous areas. The paper discusses hunting as a possible factor.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
