This shrew is recorded in the central Colombian Andes. It has a dark-brown back, a short tail, tiny eyes and ears, and records in moist montane cloud forest.
The HMW account describes a dark-brown back with gray underfur and a slightly paler buff-brown underside. Its tail is very short, dark brown, and short-haired; the eyes are tiny and the ears are small and barely visible beneath the fur.
The Colombian Small-eared Shrew inhabits Colombia’s Central Andes, including the surroundings of Manizales and Villamaría in Caldas.
A 2021 paper documented two specimens obtained through cooperation with protected-area staff. During 2018–2019, participants contributed dead animals and remains, with associated information, to the Universidad de Caldas Natural History Museum. The two shrews were preserved for examination.
Their head-and-body lengths were about 6.2 and 6.9 centimetres; both tails measured about 3.3 centimetres. Size and dental measurements mostly matched the species. The authors also called for comparisons of geographic variation. The small bodies became evidence of local occurrence and material for future comparisons.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
The study established cooperation between protected-area staff and a museum to document occurrence. The authors recommended retaining vouchers and considering such collaboration for long-term monitoring. For this shrew, comparisons among localities can improve knowledge of distribution and geographic variation relevant to conservation.
