The giant otter shrew is a semi-aquatic mammal of central African rivers and swamps. It swims by moving its laterally flattened tail and forages near water from dusk into the night.
It has a thick, rounded body, a broad flat muzzle with stiff whiskers, a dark brown back, pale underside, and laterally flattened tail.
It rests by day in a burrow in the stream bank and swims out to forage from dusk into the night. It eats aquatic animals such as fish and crabs and propels itself with side-to-side tail movements.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
