This tanager ranges from the United States to Nicaragua. The Texas atlas distinguishes P. hepatica from the older broad treatment as P. flava and describes its Texas breeding habitat in dry juniper-pinyon or pine-oak woodland.
Males are brick-red. In females, the male’s red is replaced by olive-yellow or orange-yellow.
In Texas it breeds in dry juniper-pinyon or pine-oak woodland at 1,500–2,400 m, placing its nest in a horizontal fork away from the trunk.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
