In the nominate subspecies described by Province Sud, the male has a dark gray head, white throat, black collar, and yellow belly. The female is brown, with a white throat and pale brown belly.
The male of the described subspecies is about 15 cm long; the account gives different plumage for males and females.
The nominate subspecies inhabits dense forest, forest-edge scrub, and sclerophyll forest, and takes insects from branches, leaves, and the ground.
