This penguin breeds on subantarctic islands around New Zealand and elsewhere in the Indian Ocean, then spends much of the non-breeding season at sea. It is treated as distinct from related rockhopper penguins.
Adults have a black back, white front, thin yellow eyebrow crest, and orange-brown bill. The eyes are red and the feet pinkish-white.
It comes ashore to breed and moult, then spends about five to six months at sea. It is thought to forage mainly more than 10 km offshore, but this has not been studied in detail.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
