A small, compact lark with a dark, scaly-looking back and white outer tail feathers. It is recorded in cropped grassland.
In fresh plumage the back looks finely scaly and blackish. A pale eyebrow and white outer tail feathers are useful marks.
It is recorded in cropped grassland, often on black-cotton soils, and favors lake edges. When disturbed, it darts into cover.
