This small bird ranges from the eastern Andes to southeastern South America. Its forehead and face are ochre-toned, and its wings have ochre bars. It searches dense cover for insects.
It has a gray crown, ochre-toned forehead and sides of the head, dark olive upperparts, and grayish-white underparts. Two ochre bars cross each wing. The amount of gray on the crown or breast differs among subspecies.
It feeds on insects in forests with dense vines, bamboo, or bracken, and in dense second growth. It is usually alone or in pairs and makes short sallies close to the ground to catch prey.
