The Common Lowland Paramelomys is a nocturnal rodent of New Guinea's lowland forests. It has gray fur, a tail shorter than its body, and a mainly ground-dwelling life. The account notes that the name may cover several species.
The dense back fur is silvery gray and the underside paler gray. The sparsely furred, blackish-gray tail is shorter than the body.
It is mainly terrestrial and nocturnal, and eats insects. It has been recorded in lowland and hill forest from sea level to about 1,200 m, including disturbed forest.
