The Grasshopper Sparrow is a small bird that runs through tall grass while foraging. It can disappear among the grasses and sometimes sings an insect-like buzz from a stalk.
Adults have brown, gray, and orange markings above, with a buffy tan underside that is mostly unstreaked. A flat head and a large bill for its size add to its distinctive shape.
Grasshoppers are a main food. The sparrow forages on the ground and, during the breeding season, builds a domed nest hidden at the base of a grass clump.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
