This small wren ranges from Central America into northern South America. It searches for small invertebrates among vines and leaf litter near the ground.
Its upperparts are gray-brown, with black lines on the short tail. The breast is rufous, the abdomen brownish white, and black-and-white lines pass through the eye.
It forages in forest-edge trees, low branches tangled with vines, and leaf litter. Its diet is mainly spiders and small insects; it is usually seen in pairs or family groups.
