This African pygmy mouse was described from the Mount Elgon area of Kenya. Recent work notes that some specimens may be difficult to distinguish from closely related species, so its classification still needs study.
A 2014 paper describes the sorella group as relatively large among African pygmy mice. This applies to the group and is not a diagnostic trait for M. sorella alone.
The paper describes the sorella group as occurring in Congo Basin forest-savanna transition zones. It also cautions that some specimens assigned to M. sorella may belong to other species.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
