The American Pipit is a small bird that breeds in Arctic and alpine meadows. It walks quickly while feeding and uses open areas such as shores and fields in winter.
It is slim with a small bill, gray-brown upperparts, and pale underparts. Streaking varies by season and region, and the outer tail feathers show white in flight.
It eats mostly insects and larvae, with some seeds and other plant foods in fall and winter. During migration and winter it also feeds in shallow water, taking aquatic insects.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
