This woodcock inhabits montane and mossy montane forest in the Philippines, as well as adjacent clearings. Records are from northern and central Luzon and mountains on Mindanao.
The male specimen from Mt. Kitanglad on Mindanao had dark brown and cinnamon bars across the crown and hindneck, and a cinnamon breast finely barred with dark brown.
The paper reports the species from montane and mossy montane forests and nearby clearings, usually above 1,000 m.
