This vole is recorded in the mountains of South Asia. A regional assessment describes it as diurnal and lists rocky areas, cliffs, caves, and sparse forest as habitat. A later museum revision also reports measurements of its tail.
In the 2017 revision, tail length among 29 specimens treated as Alticola montosus averaged 49.1 mm and ranged from 41 to 65 mm.
The regional assessment classifies it as diurnal and lists rocky areas, cliffs, caves, and sparse forest as habitat.
