Its main range extends from northeastern India through Myanmar, northern Laos, and Vietnam to central and southern China. An isolated population also occurs in Hong Kong.
At about 22–24 cm long, it is medium brown overall, with a slightly rufous vent. Its dark chin and white supercilium joined to a white cheek patch form a distinctive head pattern.
In Hong Kong, small groups move through shrubs and small trees, sometimes low to the ground or across grass between shrub patches. Diet and foraging are largely unstudied; a few fecal samples contained fruit, and one also contained ants.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
