The Japanese giant flying squirrel is a large nocturnal squirrel of Japan's forests. It glides between trees on a membrane stretched between its fore and hind limbs and rests in tree hollows by day.
Dorsal fur ranges from yellow-gray, brown, or chestnut to black. It has black bands around the eyes, white fur bands descending from the ears, and a gliding membrane between the fore and hind limbs.
It climbs and glides through trees at night to find food. During the day it rests in nests in tree cavities and may use several nest holes within its range.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
