The Amami Shrew is a Japanese endemic recorded on islands in the Amami group. Recent field observations on Tokunoshima documented activity both by day and at night.
Head-and-body length is 65–90 mm. The Tokunoshima animals observed had a stocky build, long pale-brown back fur, and well-developed forefeet.
The three wild animals observed were active by day and at night. They moved over leaf litter and used gaps among stones or fallen wood as cover.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
