Pelage varied among specimens assigned to M. melanurus in the study. The illustrated Mount Missim specimen had bright ear patches, grey shoulders, a red rump and a black tail.
Scats examined at Mount Missim in Papua New Guinea contained many beetles, along with grasshoppers and other invertebrates. This finding is specific to that study site.
