The Tanimbar Megapode is a ground-dwelling bird of Indonesia’s Tanimbar Islands. It builds large mounds for breeding, although detailed information about its ecology is limited.
Its plumage is brownish olive, with a short pointed crest. The face is bare and red, and the bill is pale.
Tanimbar Megapodes are restricted to the Tanimbar Islands and nest in mounds. The locations of these structures help identify breeding habitat.
The1995 conservation plan records repeated encounters and five or six mounds along a10–12km trail in southeastern Tanimbar in December1991.
Specialists proposed mapping mounds and surveying neighbouring islets. These were proposed investigations, connecting local nesting records with island-wide conservation planning.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
IUCN’s2019 release classified the species as Vulnerable. The1995 specialist plan identified introduced predators, hunting, egg collection and habitat degradation as concerns. It proposed mapping nesting mounds and investigating their overlap with areas intended for habitat protection.
