This large cockatoo has a black body set off by yellow cheek and tail markings. It feeds in flocks in eucalypt woodlands and pine plantations.
The plumage is mostly black, with a yellow cheek patch and yellow panels beneath the tail. Females have a larger yellow cheek patch, a whitish upper bill, and a pale gray eye-ring compared with males.
It feeds in flocks, eating seeds from native trees and pinecones as well as seeds from ground plants. Both sexes prepare a nest in a large tree hollow, lining it with wood chips.
