The Crimson Finch ranges from northern Australia to southern New Guinea. Much breeding takes place during the wet season, and nests are built among palm-like fronds or sometimes on artificial structures.
The two currently recognized subspecies are the Black-bellied Crimson Finch, N. p. phaeton, and the White-bellied Crimson Finch, N. p. evangelinae.
Most breeding takes place in the wet season. Both subspecies mainly nest between palm-like fronds, especially Pandanus and Corypha; the Black-bellied subspecies also uses structures such as roof rafters when available.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
