The Southern Variable Pitohui occurs on New Guinea and nearby islands and varies greatly in plumage across regions. The pool name is retained, while the colour account here is scoped to the nominate subspecies.
In the nominate P. u. uropygialis, the upper back, lower breast and belly are rich red-brown, while the remaining plumage is black. Plumage varies across the species' other subspecies.
It uses forest and forest edges, including disturbed areas and gardens, to about 1,000 m. It eats insects and fruit and gives fluting calls that nearby birds answer.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
