The Altai mole lives in forest soils. Its dense, velvet-like coat partly conceals its eyes, and earthworms are its main food.
Its eyes are barely visible in the dense, velvet-like fur. The coat ranges from smoky black to dark brown; darker animals are reported in southern mountain areas and smokier coats in northern lowlands.
It inhabits varied forest environments and is reported to avoid wetlands. Earthworms form the main part of its diet, with other soil invertebrates also eaten.
