The pileated gibbon occurs in forests of Thailand, Cambodia and southwestern Laos. Adult males and females have markedly different coat colors.
Adult males are mostly black, while females are silver-gray to pale with black areas. Newborn infants have pale coats.
It travels through trees using its long arms to swing between branches. Pairs may give coordinated calls in the morning.
