The Japanese dormouse lives in forests on Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. A dark stripe down its back and a bushy, flattened tail help identify it.
Its soft fur ranges from hazel to brown, with a dark stripe along the back. It has a tuft of hair at the front of each ear and a bushy tail that is flattened on top.
It is nocturnal and arboreal, able to grip the undersides of branches as it moves. It hibernates during cold weather or when food is scarce, and makes nests from lichen and bark.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
