A tern of islands in the southern Indian Ocean. Observations on Kerguelen showed it feeding on fish and crustaceans at sea as well as small land invertebrates.
In breeding plumage, the underside of the wings appears greyish. A study on Kerguelen used this feature to distinguish it from the related Antarctic Tern.
On Kerguelen it was observed diving for fish and crabs in surf and seaweed beds, and pecking for insects and spiders while walking through terrestrial vegetation.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
