This tanager is endemic to Peru's Mayo and Upper Huallaga valleys. It forages in semi-open country, forest edges, and secondary scrub; males show red plumage with a dark central belly.
Males have a dark wine-red head, neck, and breast, with deep red on the belly and rump and a black area at the center of the belly. Females are dark reddish-brown overall.
It forages in semi-open habitats, at forest edges, and in secondary scrub where woody cover meets more open ground.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
