The black lion tamarin is a small monkey of Atlantic Forest in São Paulo state, southeastern Brazil. From 2020 to 2024, researchers placed 27 cameras in the forest canopy at two sites: continuous forest in Morro do Diabo State Park and a 515-hectare remnant at San Maria Farm.
Cameras watched tree hollows, nest boxes, feeding stations, and other focal trees, while three groups were monitored. The videos documented the development of one infant and followed a juvenile as it grew into a subadult. Arboreal cameras recorded sleeping resources and young tamarins over time in these forest sites.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
The 515-hectare San Maria Farm forest remnant has been designated a priority area for translocation to reinforce the black lion tamarin population between protected areas. The study monitored tree cavities and nest boxes and gathered resource-use and development records from three groups.
